Project Update: Roadway Restoration

Project Update: Roadway Restoration

03.07.2025

National Grid continuously evaluates opportunities to enhance the reliability of its energy delivery networks. That’s why we’ve recently updated the backbone of the underground electric transmission infrastructure that connects our two substations in Quincy. Now, in coordination with the City of Quincy, we’re going to repave and restore city streets where we’ve worked over the last two years.

As you know, in the summer of 2022, National Grid began the North Quincy Cable Replacement Project to replace aging underground electric transmission cables that supplied bulk power to our North Quincy and Field Street Substations. This critical infrastructure project featured construction on sections of Newport Avenue, Furnace Brook Parkway, Southern Artery, Morrison and Field Streets. Now that the modern cables have been installed, energized and are supplying power, we’re planning to repave and restore impacted sections of these streets.

Upcoming Phase

Barring inclement weather or unforeseen issues, starting the week of March 17, National Grid’s contractors in coordination with City of Quincy’s DPW will mobilize to rebuild impacted sections of Newport Avenue, beginning in the Newport-Furnace Brook intersection and proceeding north on Newport Avenue. The first phase of this road work will take place on Newport Avenue from Furnace Brook Parkway to Cedar Street and is expected to proceed north. We look forward to sharing a schedule for other part of the route as soon as that information is available.

As during the construction phases of this project, our team will work closely with businesses, residents, and local officials and maintain an open dialogue while this work is taking place. While this roadwork will have impacts to traffic patterns during work hours, please note that it is being conducted in phases to mitigate inconveniences to the greatest extent feasible.

Please note that two distinct methods of road restoration will take place on the North Quincy Cable Replacement Project Route and adjacent streets identified by the City of Quincy:

Full Depth Restoration:
Contractors will excavate and restore approximately 18 inches of the roadway. Additionally, existing underground utility structures will be updated prior to repaving the road surface.

Mill and Overlay Restoration:
Contractors will remove and repave approximately two inches of the road surface. Existing underground utility structures may also be updated during this work.

This work is being coordinated with various departments within the city to create the most efficient schedule feasible. While this work will have impacts to regular traffic patterns on affected roads, we look forward to working with our counterparts in the city to mitigate impacts to the greatest extent possible.
